Amsterdam Central Station is a historic monument and the gateway to the city center. It was built between 1881 and 1889 to a design by Pierre Cuypers, Dolf van Gendt (station building), and L.J. Eijmer (station roof) and is richly decorated with Neo-Renaissance ornamentation.
With the two towers on either side of the roof, Cuypers emphasized that the station was a "new city gate." The station was built on three artificial islands in a section of the IJ River. Like many other buildings in Amsterdam, it was constructed on wooden piles (8,687 of them).
A modern, contemporary hall was built on the IJ side of the station.
